SIP Explained: How to Start Investing With Just a Few Hundred Rupees

2 min read

Most people put off investing because it seems complicated, or because they think they need a lot of money. A Systematic Investment Plan, or SIP, is one simple way to start. This guide is for education, not personal financial advice.

What a SIP is

A SIP lets you invest a fixed amount, say ₹500 or ₹5,000, in a mutual fund at regular intervals, usually monthly. It is not a product by itself. It is a method of investing.

Why people like it

  • Small start. Many funds accept SIPs from ₹100 to ₹500 per month.
  • Discipline. The money leaves your account automatically before you can spend it.
  • Rupee-cost averaging. When prices are low you buy more units, and when prices are high you buy fewer, which smooths out the average cost over time.
  • No need to time the market. Almost nobody can do it consistently.

The power of time

Here is an illustration only, not a promise. If you invested ₹5,000 every month for 20 years and the fund returned an assumed 10 percent per year, you would put in ₹12 lakh and end with roughly ₹38 lakh. The gap comes from compounding. Real returns can be lower, higher or even negative in some years.

Before you start

  • Build an emergency fund covering about six months of expenses.
  • Clear high-interest debt such as credit card balances.
  • Check you have insurance for health and, if others depend on you, life.
  • Complete your KYC with a registered platform or directly with the fund house.
  • Match the fund to your goal. Equity funds suit goals that are five or more years away. Shorter goals may need less risky options.

Mistakes to avoid

Stopping your SIP in a falling market, chasing last year’s top performer and ignoring costs are the common ones. Look at the fund’s expense ratio and long-term track record.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Read all scheme-related documents carefully.

If you are unsure, talk to a SEBI-registered investment adviser. The best time to start is when you can do it comfortably, and the second best is next month.
